While fans of the book series are excited to see it get the screen adaptation and join the ranks of others like Bridgerton, and Heartstopper, the big question is, who is playing who in the main cast of characters? Check them out here, but beware of spoilers for the books and potentially for the series!
The Summer I Turned Pretty Cast
Lola Tung as Belly
The lead character in The Summer I Turned Pretty is a young woman named Isabel Conklin, known as “Belly.” She is a 16-year-old who has changed a lot over the past year. When she arrives to Cousins Beach with her family, where they always go to spend the summer with the Fisher family, things feel very different. Belly is portrayed by Lola Tung, a complete newcomer to the scene. The Summer I Turned Pretty is her first credited acting role. According to Deadline, Tung graduated from Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City, and she is currently a student in The School of Drama Acting and Music Theater at Carnegie Mellon University. Urban Woman Mag reports that Tung is 19 years old as of this writing.
Christopher Briney as Conrad
Conrad is the older of the two Fisher brothers, who previously looked at Belly as a little sister but starts to see her in a new light. The character will be played by Christopher Briney, a young actor who is also set to appear in the upcoming movie Dali Land. The up-and-coming actor, who is in his early 20s, has his own website, which reveals that he is based in New York City but was born and raised in Connecticut. Briney attended Pace University for a BFA in Acting for Film, TV, Voiceover and Commercial. He also wrote and directed a short film called Paix.
Gavin Casalegno as Jeremiah
Gavin Casalegno will play Conrad’s younger brother Jeremiah, who is the more outgoing and energetic of the two. He has been best friends with Belly since they were kids, but now his feelings are becoming more romantic. Casalegno has been working as an actor and model for over a decade, with his website profile for his agency, The Campbell Agency, showcasing ads and pictorials for companies like Hollister. As for acting, the 22-year-old appeared in the movies Noah and When The Game Stands Tall, as well as TV shows like The Vampire Diaries and Walker, the latter of which he appeared in eight episodes as Trevor Strand.
Sean Kaufman as Steven
In The Summer I Turned Pretty, Belly has one sibling, an older brother named Steven. Although he loves to tease her as any brother would, he’s also very protective and supportive of his little sister. Sean Kaufman plays Steven. Another new face, Kaufman has only appeared in a few small parts since 2015, including roles in Manifest and FBI: Most Wanted.
David Iacono as Cam
Cam is a character who only appears in the first book of Han’s series, but he plays a big role in Belly’s personal journey. He is her first boyfriend and they have a short-lived romance together over the summer. The character will be played by David Iacono, who actually has one of the more extensive resumes of all the cast members. Iacono might be familiar to viewers, as he has been acting since 2011. A few of his most notable roles are Older Roberto in Show Me A Hero, Bo Orlov in Grand Army, and Eli Briscoe in both Seasons 1 and 2 of The Flight Attendant on Apple TV+.
Jackie Chung as Laurel
While Belly is the protagonist and most of the story revolves around her relationships with Conrad and Jeremiah, there are two very important adults in her life: her mother, Laurel, and the boys’ mother, Susannah. Laurel is played by Jackie Chung. While Chung has appeared in shows like Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19, this is arguably her first major role. According to the website of distribution company Outsider Pictures, Chung is also a stage actor, having performed with Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Actor’s Theatre of Louisville and Center Theatre Group. Chung has a degree from Stanford University.
Rachel Blanchard as Susannah
Laurel and Susannah are best friends, and their history and journey over the course of the book series are just as emotional and impactful as the teenagers’. While Susannah is bright and emotive, Laurel is a bit more closed-off, which sometimes makes it hard for her to connect with her daughter Belly. Susannah continually encourages Belly to come out of her shell and be proud of herself, and Belly often goes to her for advice. Rachel Blanchard portrays Susannah, and she has been acting since 1984, with her first role being a two-episode stint in The Kids of Degrassi Street. She’s acted consistently since then, with some of her major parts including Kristen in Are You Afraid Of The Dark?, Cher Horowitz in the Clueless TV series, Roxanne Richardson in 7th Heaven, Kitty Nygaard in Fargo, and most recently, Emma Trakarsky in You Me Her.
