Mando’s mission to reunite the Child with his own kind finally came to an end after two seasons in “Chapter 16: The Rescue.” The second season concluded with Grogu leaving with none other than Luke Skywalker. “He is strong with the Force, but talent without training is nothing,” Luke told Mando. “I will give my life to protect the Child, but he will not be safe until he masters his abilities.” Mando encouraged Grogu to go with Luke, telling the Child, “That’s who you belong with. He’s one of your kind. I’ll see you again. I promise.”
What will happen in Season 3 of The Mandalorian?
With Grogu in the care of Luke, it seems Mando is free for a new quest…perhaps involving the Darksaber? After defeating Gideon in the Season 2 finale, the titular character came into possession of the ancient lightsaber, which Bo-Katan had had her eyes set on. “Gideon has a weapon that once belonged to me. It is an ancient weapon that can cut through anything,” Bo-Katan said prior to teaming up with Mando in order to save Baby Yoda. “It cannot cut through pure beskar. I will kill the Moff and retake what is rightfully mine. With the Darksaber restored to me, Mandalore will finally be within reach.” Mando had told Bo-Katan that if she helped him rescue the Child she could have whatever she wanted. However, the Darksaber belonged to Mando following the defeat of Gideon. “She can’t take it,” Gideon informed the Mandalorian. “It must be won in battle. In order for her to wield the Darksaber again, she would need to defeat you in combat.” While Mando offered to yield, Gideon pointed out it doesn’t work that way. “The Darksaber doesn’t have power. The story does. Without that blade, she’s a pretender to the throne,” he said, to which Bo-Katan declared, “He’s right.” Dave Filoni said that The Mandalorian Season 3 will have a wider reach across the Star Wars universe, telling crowds at a CCXP panel in Brazil, “I will say that the scope of it is getting bigger, we have really cool space battles, we have lots of Mandalorians, we have the planet of Mandalore which we’ve been talking about for a long time. We get to see the Mandalorian culture, and many of the wonderful actors you’ve seen in previous seasons return, and you’ll see them all work together on this show. It’s been a very ambitious season, a lot of our directors have returned, we have a very experienced team that have been working together for a long time and I think a lot of people are going to enjoy what we have in store.” Guess we’ll have to wait and see how this storyline plays out!
