Cohen has been hit with eight lawsuits for his stunts in projects ranging from Borat to Who Is America? to Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. However, thanks to releases he has participants sign for his efforts, so far only one plaintiff has been awarded any money: Macedonian singer Esma Redžepova sued the Borat producers in 2006 for over $1 million for allegedly using her song “Chaje Shukarije” in the 2006 hit without her consent. She won and was awarded about $37,000. It was revealed that Cohen did ask Redžepova’s production house for permission to use the song, but she herself was never informed of the agreement. As of February 2021, Cohen is still embroiled with a defamation lawsuit from Roy Moore following Moore’s appearance in Who Is America?. Moore seeks $95 million in damages.
