In an excerpt from his memoir Spare (via Page Six), Harry alleged that Middleton and Prince William “howled with laughter” when he came to them with a choice of costume for a Native and colonial party they were all attending together: He could go as a Nazi or as a pilot. Prince Harry was 20 years old at the time. JIM WATSON/AFP via Getty Images “I phoned Willy and Kate, asked what they thought. Nazi uniform, they said,” Harry recalled. He said he went to their house to model the Nazi uniform for him. “They both howled. Worse than Willy’s leotard outfit! Way more ridiculous! Which, again, was the point,” he said. William attended the party dressed as a lion. It isn’t the first time he’s addressed the scandal, but it’s the first time he’s blamed his brother and sister-in-law for the gaffe. In Harry & Meghan, released in December 2022, Harry called wearing the Nazi costume “one of the biggest mistakes in my life.” Rumors of the group’s tone-deaf costume ideas were previously discussed in the book Battle of Brothers, in which royal historian Robert Lacey wrote, “Harry chose his costume in conjunction with his elder brother—the future King William V, then 22, who had laughed all the way back to Highgrove (Charles’ country home) with the younger sibling he was supposed to be mentoring—and then onwards to the party together."
