Along with close friend and former Outlander costar Graham McTavish, who played Jamie’s uncle Dougal MacKenzie, the duo explores castles, lochs and even the battlefield of Culloden, which viewers will remember from Outlander. Although you’d think they’d already know everything there is to know about Scotland, Heughan and McTavish learn about Scottish culture along with viewers as they meet experts and local artisans—including whiskey makers, of course. As they travel by motorcycle, bicycle, RV and even boat, the show will also feature some best-bud banter that lends humor and insight into their friendship. “I can’t believe this was your idea of a good time,” McTavish jokes as they ride a tandem bike in the show’s just-released trailer. And although another opportunity to watch the gorgeous Scots themselves would be enough of a reason to tune in, the landscapes of Scotland are jaw-droppingly beautiful as well. “The real passion for me and I think for Sam is to explore this wonderful character which is Scotland,” McTavish told Good Morning America. “I mean it’s a huge character in Outlander, but for us this was a chance to expand that further and to look into the history and the culture.” Born and raised in Scotland, Heughan also said the show gave him the opportunity to discover more about his homeland. “I think we both knew a lot about Scottish culture but we wanted to know more,” he told GMA. “We learned things that we didn’t know before.”
What is Men In Kilts?
The eight-episode, half-hour series originally started as an idea for a podcast and later a video series called Clan Lands, as Heughan announced last summer on Instagram. “We’d been playing these Highland warriors for years now, faking it, and we thought, ‘you know, it’d be nice to sort of find out a bit more about it,’” Heughan told Oprah Magazine. “I’ve always been interested in Scotland’s history, the clans, and the culture. We have such huge tourism from Outlander,” he said. “We just wanted to sort of go on that adventure as well, and bring some of that to people, because it’s part of [Outlander] that we don’t get to explore anymore as the show has moved on," and is now set in North Carolina. Heughan also said they already have a plan for Season 2—here’s hoping!
When will Men in Kilts premiere?
Consider this guys your Valentines! The show premieres Feb. 14, 2021. According to the Clan Lands Instagram, the show filmed last September. In a video from the first day of shooting, McTavish jokes that they’re “sobering up” after apparently sampling some whiskey. “We’re still alive,” Heughan laughed. “I’m ready to go again, so day two, let’s go to the pub.”
Is there a Men in Kilts trailer or preview?
You’ve seen the trailer above, but McTavish and Heughan released a video for Starz talking about the series. In another Instagram video with Heughan (in a kilt!) and McTavish when the show wrapped, Heughan said, “I think we’ve had a really remarkable set of weekends we’ve been shooting. We’ve got some amazing characters and locations. We can’t wait for you guys to see it.” “I’ve gotten to know him a lot better,” McTavish said. Heughan joked back, “That’s probably the one thing we don’t want to talk about.”
