“This story takes a comprehensive look at the entire prison system, the good, the bad and the ugly of it,” executive producer David Glasser said at the Paramount+ TCA day. “These characters are in a situation in a town where they are trying to bring some justice to a town that has none, and that has operated on [that premise]. So, really at the end of the day, they are tackling a flawed system and giving us all parts of the pie to take a look at.” Here is more of what we know about Mayor of Kingstown:
When does Mayor of Kingstown premiere?

Who’s in the Mayor of Kingstown cast for season 1?
Jeremy Renner as Mike McLusky
“The story, the backdrop and the surroundings are the ultimate character in this that end up defining who each one of us are,” Renner says. “There’s something really interesting, I think, in Mike. I feel like all of us perceive limitations or obstacles. He’s a very actionable character that I really like. He’s definitely a doer. “Taylor said to me, ‘Look, I love the idea of a character that’s a man of few words.’ He says, ‘Not unlike Cory in Wind River, you don’t talk a whole lot. He’s a guy that’s really a man of few words, but he’s going to talk a whole lot.’ I’m like, ‘That doesn’t make any sense. It makes zero sense.’ “But I really love the strength of this family. I love the strength of this character. I love the strength of all the characters. It all starts with the limited, bleak surroundings that they are in. That’s what we all share, the good guys and bad guys and the ugly of it all. We all share a similar sort of backdrop and ultimately are products of our environment.”
Dianne Wiest as Mariam McLusky
“I don’t think she really even believes in family anymore,” Weist says of Mariam. “She’s an unusual person, in that when her husband, who invented this job that all three of her sons do, was killed, and she still tries, but she can’t get her sons away. She can’t get them to move. She can’t get them to get another job. I think she feels really like a failure at family. And this has left her waiting every day for news that one of her boys has died. This, of course, would drive anybody crazy. And she’s not courageous in the accepted way that she can just say, ‘OK, this is my life. My boys left.’ She is enraged, and she takes that rage out on her children.”
Taylor Handley as Kyle McLusky
“Kyle is the youngest of the McLusky family,” Handley says. “A local police officer, local detective. He is the youngest of three brothers. When I saw this character, there was a dynamic I saw in the script between my character and myself personally that I can just really attach to and bring truth and authenticity to. “There’s this big debate that’s going on with Kyle through the first season. And that push and pull is, he sees how the family business can bring such tragedy, and he sees how corrupt this town is. I think the difference between Kyle and his brothers is that whereas his brothers have committed to fixing this town, Kyle has a question whether or not he wants to cut his losses and move away, which is why he is signing up for the state troopers in the first episode, you know, cut his losses and move away and maybe try to cut that generational dysfunction and start new.”
Tobi Bamtefa as Bunny, head of the Crips and a drug dealer
“He’s a man of plenty of words,” Bamtefa says. “Getting into the character was a very interesting process because I’m British and I’m also Nigerian and Jamaican, so the American accent is a technical aspect of things. And then I had to figure out from the script what kind of person he is, because that would also inform the vernacular he uses. Then there’s also the culture of gangs in America, Crips more specifically. There’s a language that they use. There was a history behind all of that. I had to do extensive research in order to bring an authentic character to life. “As part of my own process, I’ve based Bunny on certain people that I admire, and I also relate to. He’s a family man, like it or not. I don’t even think he would call himself a ‘drug dealer.’ I think he would call himself an ‘expert in pharmaceuticals.’ So, it’s a character with a lot of depth. There were decisions that he made that told me that this is somebody, if given the right circumstance and the right sort of situation, probably wouldn’t do what he currently does. He is essentially a creature of circumstance, much like everybody else around him. And he has a morbid acceptance of this world that they live in. He just is trying to survive like everybody else. Not just survive. He’s also trying to live and progress his family by the only means that are available to them, i.e., pharmaceuticals.” The series also stars Kyle Chandler, Pha’rez Lass, Hugh Dillon, Derek Webster, Aidan Gillen and Hamish Allan-Headley.
Emma Laird as Iris
“Iris comes to Kingstown, and she engages with a lot of the powerful people,” Laird says. “And she, like Jeremy and Tobi, and all those touched on in this landscape that is Kingstown, it is how we respond to that, and what happens to us in that environment. It’s a heavy show, and my character goes through the works.”
What is the story for season 1 of Mayor of Kingstown?
The official description from Paramount+: “Mayor of Kingstown follows the McLusky family – power brokers in Kingstown, Mich., where the business of incarceration is the only thriving industry. Tackling themes of systemic racism, corruption and inequality, the series provides a stark look at their attempt to bring order and justice to a town that has neither.” Renner comments on the story, saying, “We’re all a product of our environment, and the environment is bleak. How each character, or even my character, chooses to deal with that, the limitations of our environment, is very specific.”
