While interviewing with Yahoo Entertainment to promote her new film, Christmas in Paradise, Hurley, 57, explained what it was like working with Perry during a time when he was suffering from a severe alcohol and drug addiction, which the actor, 53, touches on in his new memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing. The Austin Powers star was asked about being mentioned in his book, which recounts the story of their film being abruptly shut down in order for the Friends actor to go to rehab. While Hurley said she has positive memories of Perry, she admitted it was a “nightmare” to work with him during a time when he was really struggling. “I have very fond memories of him,” she stated in the interview published Wednesday, Nov. 9. She followed that by noting, “To be honest, it was a nightmare working with him at that time.” “As it’s now known, our movie was shut down because of his addiction,” she went on to explain. “We were in a force majeure and had to sit at home twiddling our thumbs for some time.” “Force majeure” is a common clause used in contracts that frees both parties from obligation if an extraordinary event prevents them from performing, per Cornell Law School. “That was a little tough,” Hurley continued, adding, “But he came back and he was fabulous.” After over two months in a private rehab center, Perry eventually returned to set, although he “had to revoice everything that we shot before.” “It was tough, obviously he was having a tough time, but he was still very charming and a lovely person to work with,” the English actress added. “But you could see he was suffering for sure.” Perry recalls the story and more about his years of suffering from addiction in the memoir, which is currently available from multiple retailers.
